These steps enables you to find vulnerabilities in the system after a successful login to the box, we always start by finding the system version and kernel, this way enable us to find system and kernel exploits so we can use the right tools, if not then we can try some of the commands in here tying to get a privilege escalation without the need for tools.

What applications are installed? What version are they? Are they currently running?

What NIC(s) does the system have? Is it connected to another network?
